She hated her power. It isolated her. It made people fear her and her fear others. What she’d done in the past with it had left scars on her. Perhaps not physical ones but scars just the same. However, when in a pinch it did come in handy. She could replace a fallen teammate. Turn a criminal’s abilities to the side of good. That was useful. Her powers had been crucial to plans when she’d been with momma. She knew they gave her worth. She just didn’t have to like it.

The question was, now that she was on the good guys side, what did she do in a fight until she was able to steal someone’s power? What if there were no powers to steal? She needed to be strong just on her own. She didn’t want to rely on her powers for everything. And it was a good enough question to be posed to any mutant really. If you don’t have access to your powers, what can you still do? Well Rogue wanted to make sure she had an answer.

That didn’t mean she had to like getting her butt kicked so thoroughly.

Her back slammed into the mat, the air rushing from her lungs with “oomph!” Once given the room she propped herself up on her elbows and tossed a look at the guy that had put her down so easily. ”Dang Logan, you don’t have to make it hurt so much!” She grumped a second more before rolling over and climbing to her feet again.

”Ya gonna make a girl very tempted to take a little of that healing off the top by the end of this aren’t ya?” She stretched her back before coming back into the circle. They had only just started and she could already feel the bruises starting to collect.

"It's going to hurt hell of a lot more when you get your ass handed to you out there." Logan kept his hands up, picking himself up from the low stance he had taken to toss her. He grinned and looked at her on the ground. "You keep laying around in combat and you're going to get dead that way." He watched her, not waiting for her to attack him.

This wasn't exactly how he saw his morning going, but it did. He was always willing to get a work out in, and some combat training was the perfect way. He knew Rogue's powers well enough. Don't get close. Could hurt even him. His healing ability was fast, but not when it was being taken. That's why they had to train though wasn't it, for when the powers stoped. Logan didn't have to worry there, but some of the others did.

"I'll make sure to pull my punches for you," Logan said as he watched her get back up. He wasn't going to. No point to it. He was still hesitant to get to close, stay away from grapples and pins for the time being. Smal, contact was okay, and long exposure and he didn't think he could handle it. Best not try and tempt it.

"Come on, try and hit me. I'll show you how to deflect it." He motioned with both his hands for her to come on. He expected her to rush. If she could control her combat she could control most of what she did. Defence was probably the best for her. Had to learn that before you could even begin to attack. She'd learn that shortly as to why.

Yeah, yeah, she knew that. Didn’t make it any more fun right now. Not for the first time she wondered why she bothered trying so hard. Why did she have to fight? It was a choice, they wouldn’t, couldn’t make her if she just wanted to be nothing but a student. It was maybe the safer route but then, what else was she going to do with herself? It wasn’t like she could live a normal life anyway.

”Ever heard a’ playing possum?” she grumped at him. ”It’s a survival technique. Make ‘em think ya already done fur.” Ok so it was just an excuse and she knew it. She sighed and rolled over, pushing herself back up to her feet. He hadn’t offered a hand as someone might have done for anyone else but she didn’t hold it against him. She was who she was after all.

Rolling her shoulders she got ready to go again. ”How gentlemanly of you.” Her tone said she knew he was lying, that sarcastic air that she put on like another layer of clothes to keep people away. She didn’t have a problem with Logan, he was actually a good guy for all his gruffness. It was just hard to turn off her defenses completely.

This was a trap and she knew it. She also knew she was going to end up in it. She considered for a moment what move she might make before actually moving in with an attempt at a bit of blunt force, her fist coming towards him. This was probably going to leave a bruise on one of them too. And since she wasn’t the one with quick healing she was the logical guess.

"Playing possum ain't goain't to work in every fight. Plus I thought you had a little more fight than that in you. Wanted to be a little more scrappy." Logan motioned again for her to rush him. He waited, fists at the ready as if he was going in to a boxer stance. It didn't really mattered what stance he took for what he had planned. He knew he would be fast enough.

As she rushed Logan ducked her fist and moved to the side. He used her momentum agaisnt her, knocking her past him to the ground and letting her stumble. "See that, don't always need to punch and hit the person. Can turn their attacks agaisnt them. Use their momentum against them. That don't work you put them in a pin." He stood casually, letting his guard down. It was another trap. Let her think he wasn't watching.

It was also a judge on her. Was she going to attack when he wasn't ready? Hopefully. He stood casually and kept one arm at his side while he talked with the other. "Have to judge the other opponents strength. You get them in a pin and they can over power them, there's no point. They'll turn on you so fast and you're done for. Ain't no possum this time."

Logan looked to her, reaching for one of the bottles of water that were there. He cracked it open, chugging down a sip. He tossed it to the ground after screwing on the lid and moved around the mat. "You can throw a punch though, got that going for you. How hard do you think you can actually hit? Punching can only take you so far. Small bones in your hand, turn it to sawdust. Want to use your elbows or knees. Maybe a headbut. Stronger bones."

”Well there ya go ruining all my future plans.” she shot back with her usual amount of snark. No, playing possum wasn’t going to work, she already knew that. Besides, pretending to be dead wasn’t exactly fighting at all. What use were you at that point? ”If ah get good and scrappy people may get hurt in more ways then a few bruises.” She couldn’t afford to slip up.

She had to pick herself up off the ground again as he dodged and shoved her past him without any effort. Pushing her hair out of her face. ”You gonna just toss me around and talk or are ya actually gonna show me how to do some of that?” His whole sensei act wasn’t really jiving with her style. She hadn’t really been a fan of the Karate Kid movies.

She had been a scrapper once upon a time. Back home before touching someone had meant all sorts of bad things. When she’d been a kid, she’d been a tough one, a tom boy, always running around barefoot and tussling with the boys. She could lick most of ‘em too. But times change.

”Alright, then teach me something Miagi.” She set her feet, balancing her weight and raising her hands up, loosely curled as she waited for him to make the move.

"Yeah sometimes people need to get a little more hurt than as much as then others will hit them. Sometimes that line needs to be crossed." Logan had crossed that line more than once. He had memories of it, vivid memories. They came every now and then, but he knew they were there. You didn't forget the smell of claws tearing through flesh. You didn't forget the sight of the blood that drained. You didn't forget all the kills. They may be fuzzy but they were there. A lesson of what had to be done and will have to be done again.

"I was enjoying just tossing you. I told you how to do it, were you listening. Use you opponents momentum agaisnt them, wait for them to attack." Though sometimes defence didn't work so good either. Had to know when to do what. Brute strength agaisnt a weak defence was still going to land you on your ass. He could show her that.

Raising his hands up he moved back over to her. Hands up, fists at the ready. We swung a fist at her, going slow enough that she should be able to deflect it. He then swung again and again, keeping his hits slower than normal and a less than his full strength. A few came faster than the others, or followed a previous punch more closely, but for the most part it should be easy to defend, deflect and weave around it.

Then he got low drove his shoulder into her. As he did he grabbed her arm, twisting it and applying pressure as he spun her around. He had he so she was pressed agaisnt the mat, him behind her holding her arm. If she struggled it would only hurt more, though he didn't apply enough pressure to come close to breaking it. He could, but it wasn't going to happen. "Get a good hold of them and you control the situation. Just like this, can use your knee to apply pressure. Maybe a little on the arm." He pushed a little more, making sure she'd feel what he was talking about.

He could hear someone else watching them, smell them. Probably looked like a one sided fight, and it really was. Him holding her arm, pressing a little to hard to be considered playful. "You see the use of it. Being able to hold your opponent down." Logan may not be the best teacher, but he knew how to fight. He knew what hurt and hopefully that came across. Let her demonstrate that.

The coming and going of both students and other was something that made the school seem a little bit more alive, it gave the feeling of not everything being constant and Jean thought that was a good thing. It was easy to rely on the things you knew but it was always the changes that had you move forward and grow. The past couple of years the school had opened its doors for mutants, all of very varying character but they were welcomed, regardless of background or mutation.

Jean tried her best to put aside enough time to be able to meet them all but needless to say, not everyone enjoyed being approached, and for different recent. More often than not the dwellers at the school had experiences tied to their mutations that weren't always pleasant, had maybe hurt or scared someone. As a result they at first distanced themselves. Then, there were just those you wanted to be left alone. Jean couldn't say that either of those things discouraged her, mostly not at all.

Seeking herself to the gym though, it wasn't initially to interact but mainly to pick up an item she had forgotten the other day and she was surprised to see the two who were training together. An unlikely combination but encouraging all the same. She leaned quietly against the door frame not to interfere, arms loosely crossed and with a smile on her lips. The prickliest of the two people in the whole school, as far as she knew and if you didn't count physical appearance, as that would include the young man in her English class for 6th grade.

When there seemed to be a moment of pause, she cleared her throat lightly. "Don't let me interrupt, I'm just here to get some things." She sidestepped into the room but didn't right away engage in searching for her lost item, instead she curiously eyed the two combatants.

”Yeah and ah could tell ya how ta make my Aunt Carrie’s first place cherry pie and leave ya in the kitchen but I promise ya iff’n ah don’t show ya each step ya ain’t gonna get it right.” She snapped right back. The good thing about Logan, he was just about as surly as her so it was a good equal give an take along those lines.

Finally he slowed down a little and gave her something more to react too. She managed to block, dodging out of the way and keeping ahead of him. She even dared to try and return a few if her other arm wasn’t being used. She was trying the new style, she wanted to do more then just back yard brawling.

He went low and she came up with her knee, driving it into him as he grabbed her arm. He spun her too fast though and she ended up on the mat again. So much for gaining any confidence in her budding skills.

”Uh huh… ya break mah arm and ah promise ya a kiss ya wont forget.” She didn’t move her shoulders, she was familiar enough wit the arm trick to know better. Didn’t mean she wasn’t a flexible and willing to take a chance. Bracing her toes on the mat she put that brief interest in yoga to use and kicked her other foot back, the heel of her boot heading right for him. He’d either take it or let her go.

Company wasn’t what Rogue really wanted. At least not the sort of company that Jean Grey represented. As grumpy as she was with everyone she couldn’t help but raise the bar around Jean. Her only response to there new audience was a grunt. Which might have only been a result of her almost being sat on by a guy with a metal skeleton.

Logan released his grip on Rogue and moved back. "If you think there's steps to fighting, you're not doing it right. You don't plan your moves, not like following a recipe. Have to learn how to react to your opponent, react to what they are doing." He sighed and looked over to where Jean had came in. He didn't mind an audience, they all needed to learn.

"What about you Red, maybe you need to go a few rounds on the mat too. Need to learn to defend yourself too." He crossed his arms and looked at Rogue. "Maybe you can go agaisnt Rogue here, let her see if she actually retained any of those ass kickings." Logan moved off the mat reaching for his water bottle again.

He took another big gulp, tossing it down once the lid was back on. "You said you wanted to learn that he steps. You learn in the moment, have to get a feel for fighting. A fist comes towards you, you have to know how to react. Got options. Can duck, dodge, take the hit. Seem to be good at that one." He moved back towards the mat. "Can use your opponents momentum against them, like I did for your pitiful swing. Lots of options, not ones you learn."

Sure you could fine tune what you were doing, learn steps to avoid getting hit or how it worked better for you. But actual fighting was live and in the moment. Following step by step would only have you end up on your ass. That's all Rogue was going to learn if she kept going at it that way. How to land on your ass each time.

"Maybe you're not just cut out for fighting. Need someone to apply bandages." Logan was trying to get her going. Sometimes anger brought out a true fighter. Very least she may realize her mistakes if when she lost her cool.

When Logan glanced her way and noted her entry, Jean lifted a hand in a small but a little awkward wave, followed by a equally small smile to cover that up. It wasn't her intention to intrude nor to make either of them unfocused on their training and task at hand. At Logan's question she huffed a breath of air, mostly out of amusement. Surely he would know by now that she'd spent plenty of time training at Xavier's but it was also very likely that the knowledge he possessed, was very different from hers, cultivated over a much longer time that she had even lived. It was a bit daunting to think about it, but not less interesting. "Oh, no, I'm fine, thanks."

There was also the fact that Jean was well aware that as of late, she had been slacking with the training, particularly the hand-to-hand. She could always count on Scott to be her partner when she needed but she let other things take up her time, especially since it could be considered something of a moment of peace for all of them. There wasn't a outright need to fight. She knew though, that keeping up was always a good idea.

While neither of them looked particularly happy to have her watching, Jean could tell if not by looks then by her empathy that Rogue was the least enthusiastic of them. Logan seemed neutral, had only registered her presence while the southern woman gave off something different, something sharper even. Even so, Jean gave her a smile and greeted her politely. "Marie."

Jean moved towards the corner of the room, where she found what she had been looking for but decided against leaving. Instead, she leaned herself against a door frame, hoping that she'd come away from this session having learned something, while not having been participating.

”If there ain’t steps then what are they teachin’ at all those dojo’s?” She thought physical activity was supposed to release some of those mood lifting hormones in your brain but Rogue wasn’t feeling it. Her mood was no better then when they’d started. Actually it might be worse. And she couldn’t ever remember hearing Wolvie talk so darn much either.

She rolled up and sat up, wondering if she could get away with calling it quits yet and looking for a different teacher. Then he had to go all lecturer and put her nose in it in front of Jean. Ooo she was steamed! If she had Cyclops eyes Logan would have had a massive hole right through him about now. After a moment she got back up to her feet and stiffly walked over to her own water bottle.

Biting her cheek at Wolvie’s running mouth, she was a little relieved that Jean declined the invitation. It was bad enough when it was just you knowing how humiliating you’d done. It was worse the more people knew. And the woman using her given name only peeved her off more. Just because she’d given her real name for he damn school paperwork didn’t mean she wanted to use it. Or hear it. She hadn’t been Anna Marie in a long, long time. Anna Marie was pretty much dead. She was Rogue now.

Before stepping back towards the mat, she checked her clothes and the wraps on her hands and wrists. Making sure nothing had slipped, making sure she was still covered. ”Maybe I’m not. Maybe I’m only cut out to steal what I need. And maybe you’re just as mean as your name suggests.” She shot back. The kicker was, she could put bandages on. Theresa was still there in her head, a nurse, a good person. Her skills were Rogue’s skills now if she needed them. Unfortunately for her today, Theresa hadn’t been a fighter.

"You think I learned to fight in a dojo? You ain't learning nothing until you can actually fight. Either you can, or you can't." Logan moved his arms out and back, stretching them out. Sure you could learn basic lessons, learn how to throw a punch. But when it came down to it, your lesson may not match every scenario. Younhad to fight in the moment. Just because you learnt to dodge a punch, didn't mean you could dodge a kick. Everyone was out there to try and trick you when it came to combat, to get that upper edge.

He had really pissed her off now, good. Though she wasn't attacking, typical. Came to pissing someone off they either swung, or started talking. True emotions showed in that time, fight or yap like a little dog. All bark and no bite was what they typicall were. Logan just shook his head and looked to the mat. She needed to get better at this. "You think your opponent is going to play nice, that they're going to not be mean. Out there, there is no dojo. There's no mat to fall on, no feeling sorry for yourself. You either fight, or you get beat. Have to get your head in to it before you can learn how to be a real fighter."

He motioned with his arms for her to come at him. But before he did anything he looked back at Jean. "Where did you start when chuckles first had you guys training. You and slim wrestle around? Snow cone go up agaisnt the punching bag. How'd you guys learn to fight. Or did he just push your powers."

Logan looked from Rogue to Jean. "You ought to get in here and train. Least let Rogue see what she can do. Be good for both of you." He could tell that wasn't going to happen though, not now at least. Maybe he'd get Jean on the mat one day. Though if he had to place bets on who would win, his money was on Rogue. She was a scrapper, she'd kick her ass.

Turning back he looked at Rogue. "Alright, swing at me. Hit me, hard as you can. I know you want to right now. So lay it on me. Hit me. I ain't gonna do anything but tell you what you did wrong." He looked down at her. His arms were lowered, not raised to block. He wanted to see the punch she threw. How she balled her fist, wether she released or swung early. How she pulled herself back. It was a good starting point as any.

The negative association to the name Jean had used, was something the psychic picked up, not because she was trying to but that she had passed close enough to the younger woman to simply feel it. There was also something about the look on Rogue's face that told her more, made the resentment to the particular name pretty clear. Jean corrected herself mentally then, that to use Rogue instead. She should've known perhaps by now, and not having assume. At least, it was easily corrected, in her eyes anyway.

Logan's question at first seemed like a valid one but the follow-up had her blink. "We didn't wrestle," she answered stoutly and ignored any double meaning. She raised her chin up a little before continuing answering. "Our main focus was always the use of our powers but we learned to fight, too. Hand to hand. Nothing fancy but still, we held our own pretty well, all five of us."

Jean hesitated. Technically she should train, it would most definitely be good for her but she remained seated, thinking the suggestion through. Her biggest worry was, if she was honest with herself, that she'd look like a beginner, which was possible given that she hadn't exactly put effort into keeping up with her hand to hand. Maybe this was a way of trying to get to know both of them better. Succumbing to that thought, Jean got up and raised her hand tentatively, a means of politely interrupt them.

"If it helps, I'd be willing to join you two," she said and moved to take a spot on the mat. Chances were that it would be her and Rogue with Logan teaching, but that was alright too.

She wasn’t attacking because she wasn’t that dumb. And she wasn’t that angry. Pissed sure, but not blind to everything and ignorant of what he was trying to do. If he really wanted to get her riled up he should have brought Gambit in here with him. The damn Cajun had a way of winding her up like a top. But no, she just figured he was testing her, seeing if she could keep her cool. Which, considering that wasn’t what Logan was best at was probably a hint she was wrong in her assumption.

That was all right. Tit for tat some said right? ”Ya know, for someone with yur reputation in a fight, ah never would have guessed you talk ‘em into submission.” She smirked, just to let him know his attempt to make her mad weren’t working as well as he had hoped. He was gruff and grumpy. That was part and parcel to her own, she could take that.

She was back on the mat, though paused when he did, glancing between him and Jean for a moment before moving forward. She wasn’t going to count on him not reacting and just letting her hit him. Healing factor or not. She approached with an eye waiting to see some twitch to give away a different intention. She had her arms up, she wasn’t a boxer but she was familiar enough with the idea of keeping her arms up to help block. Instead of one hit though she tried for a combo, the first from the shoulder towards his jaw and the second aimed for his solar plexus.

Then Jean decided she was going to play finally. Rogue didn’t know which was better, her on the matt participating or sitting on the sides watching. It felt more judgmental just watching, something Rogue was sensitive too. She backed off Logan a little, waiting to see how he was going to play this.

Logan saw the smirk after Rogue's comeback and offered a smirk back. "Yeah, well so far you ain't been fighting, just dancing around." He stood his ground, motioning for her to come on already. She was one to talk about him yapping. So far she hadn't even thrown a punch at him. They were on equal grounds. He blamed the safety of the mats, the fact that they didn't actually want to hurt one another. This was training, not a real fight. So they weren't going to act like it was.

Rogue came to the mat, eyeing him up. He stood his ground, arms at his side, eyes watching her. It was like an animal watching its prey. Waiting, not, to striking, just waiting to act. As the punch came forward he made no move to block it. Hit his jaw, and then solar plexus. Logan stumbled back but for the most part he was fine. He just grinned and rubbed his jaw. "See now that's more like it. Thinking fast on your feet with a combo." He grinned and stepped off the mat.

Jean said she was willing to have a go and Logan moved off to the side. He grabbed his water again, and looked to the two of them. "All five of you held your own, I can see Hank maybe, you and slim, but Bobby and the bird? Can't see either of them in a fight." Logan crossed his arms and looked at Rogue and Jean again. So maybe he wasn't a good teacher, he wasn't patient enough to wait on others. But he still wanted to see what they both could do.

"Alright Rogue, let's see what you got. At least it will be a fair fight this time." He smirked and watched from the side lines. This was either going to go really good, or really bad. Who was the healer again? Maybe he should got run and get them. "No powers Red, just a good clean brawl. Rogue here wanted to learn how to fight if the powers were ever gone."
