In late 1992, an alien vessel crash lands on Earth, catching the attention of SHIELD and newly appointed director, Nick Fury. Most of the vessel is too damaged to be salvaged or identified, with the exception of the device on board, which Fury places into storage. After the promotion of SHIELD associate Carol Danvers to NASA's head of security, Fury reaches out to her about placing the alien device in her care--more specifically, in the care of the highly advanced and well-protected facility in Cape Canaveral, Florida.
Carol Danvers and the scientist Walter Lawson (whose true identity is Kree warrior Mar-Vell, sent to Earth to gather intel and search for a lost Kree device) are caught an energy pulse by the accidentally activated machine. As a Kree, the device has no effect on Mar-Vell but it perfectly blends Carol's human physiology with Kree and, specifically, Mar-Vell's.
The accident is too late to cover up, and to make the best of it, the World Security Counsel (as per Fury's request) shares partial details to the public, including Carol Danvers' new powers. Months later, the facility is once again attacked, this time by Skrull, who believe Mar-Vell has information pertaining to the missing Skrull princess, Anelle. In the chaos, Mar-Vell is killed by one of his own, Yon-Rogg, who was sent to kill Mar-Vell for his presumed betrayal.
With Mar-Vell dead, the Skrull's new objective is to acquire the Kree device in the facility. To draw the war away from Earth and prevent the device from falling in enemy hands, Ms Marvel and Yon-Rogg escape with the device. That day, Carol Danvers says goodbye to Earth to fight a war. The official story is that Ms Marvel saved many lives by taking a dangerous alien artifact (that could not be contained by human methods) into space.
more to come.
