Remy had guessed right, as Gadget pulled out her earbuds when she saw him. The music she was listening to was still easy to hear, even coming out of the tiny earbuds.
"Oww... what is?" she asked, smiling brightly, but didn't waste much time waiting for an explanation. Her Israeli accent and his Cajun French made for an interesting combination. Anything with a bow was meant to be unwrapped, and she had the bow off in a flash. Not one to waste much, she didn't actually tear the bag but carefully unfolded it.
"New parts!" she cried upon reaching the contents. Not working mattered very little to her; things like this rarely stayed in their original form and use for very long. It would take her a little while to analyze them and see what had burned up. On one it was pretty obvious that a resister had gone all Chernobyl, but others would require more effort to trace.
The nice thing about cards like this was they were a goldmine of microprocessors to be re-purposed. Shani came around the table to give him a hug. Remy was very adept at gift-giving, and she figured he'd earned it.
"No need work, I mostly, what is word? Eat for parts?" she told him happily, as she pushed her hair back behind her ear.
Shani nodded an affirmative when asked if she was working on anything fun, but didn't look exactly happy.
"Was try to make shield device. Works in lab, but no can figure a way for power. Suck too much to work" she admitted with a frown. She'd been working on the power problem for days in her free time. "Can not know how Stark make work. Beating suit take, must have something like" she said, sounding frustrated as she plopped back into chair. She picked up one of the cards to examine it, beginning to blue print it out of habit.
"If could just get little time with Iron man suit..." she continued, thinking out loud as she stared intently at the card and chewed on her lip while she pondered. Then she would know how Stark made it work! But, at the moment at least, that didn't seem too likely.
"Stark have Arc reactor, I have... used phone batteries" she said with a hint of sadness as she held one up, but then it turned into a smile and a giggle. Stark was also a gazillionaire, so, yah, he got the best toys. He was also a registered super hero, which she was not, so not drawing a lot of attention was probably a good thing, at least for now.
"And Yes, Shani is Star Trek freak" she admitted proudly. "In lab, shield able to deflect items thrown at, but pull too much power. Got better with capacitor, but still too much. You... around with breakers trip two nights go?" she asked sheepishly. "Will never admit, but might have had something do with experiment..." she confessed. Hey, if you don't blow a few circuit breakers now and then, you couldn't be a card-carrying member of the Mad Scientists Guild.
"Reason is, bad things seem to find. Many bullets at Stark Expo. Want to "be prepared", like Girl Scout. So, start over with this..." she said, and pulled up an engineering drawing on the computer. "Think made good on here now. Have to get design out of head, into computer, so can 3D print. Pieces made most of carbon fiber." she explained, pointing to her head, then the computer as she explained the process she'd been going through to design this new gadget.
The designs on the screen looked a lot like honeycombs, with some sort of mechanics or electronics in each one. While the one she currently had selected filled most of the screen, it was hard to say if that was actual size or zoomed in or out.
"Shani no going to feel guilty about Icee Man. Serve him right for digging out old electric guitar and playing during study time for students" she replied with a prim nod. Problem was, she already felt guilty, and would in all likelihood be knocking on Bobby's door at roughly 9:30 to confess & apologize. Give or take an hour.
"Personal force field, that was original goal. But just too much power. Got to work, but needed backpack-size capacitors. Maybe work for other things, but not what I want for" she said sadly. "But... can always use more batteries!" she said cheerfully, changing gears from disappointed to happy in a dizzying fraction of a second.
"So, this replacement. Each hex is separate, but link to form whole. Ah, ah... work together?" she said, gesturing madly to try to get her point across that they worked together as a team. "Got idea from bees and ants. Was watching ants move big bug. Each hex is like ant; each is intelligent as ant. Knows how to work with others. Each has own kinetic generator; moving, breathing, this make power" she explained, pointing to various odd looking components inside of the hex.
"Ah, but that thing. Lot small hexes fit same area one big hex. So use small where must be flexible, but large where not!" she chirped happily. "Around joint, hex very small. But chest, front and back legs, make big. as no must bend much. But, have one tiny problem... Need to test" she said, as her tone of voice began to be laced with honey and hearts.
"Have made couple of sample pieces. Need to see if hold up to bullet. Remy maybe have way to test parts, see if hold up? Was go make mass driver to test, but maybe you easier way?" she cooed with a big smile, big blue eyes and batting eyelashes.
In the months since her arrive, Shani, (or Gadget, her code name) had gotten something of a reputation. Beta-test gadgets didn't always work exactly as planned. Stuff she made on the fly could have all sorts of quirks... This project was at least something she'd been able to plan out, but it seemed like she was hoping to have "someone" hit one with a high-velocity projectile! Would it hold up? Would it disintegrate? Would it explode? One way to find out.
Einstein said "A Test is worth a Thousand theories".
