Fence had a Bitcoin problem. It wasn't something Remy could help much with, because he didn't really understand it beyond "internet gold that you could, somehow, mine". He also didn't feel much like helping because, well, it kept Fence kind of mellow, typing away at internet forums, and building weird mining rigs. So maybe he had enabled him a little, like when over a year ago, Fence had Remy stealing graphics cards because it was overpriced and impossible to find. Remy thought they'd sell it all, but Fence actually kept them all, building some monstrosity, and, when one card or another inevitably burned, Fence set them aside, because he was going to work on them when he had time. He never had time. Between internet forums and work, and Remy used that order on purpose, Fence never had time.

So, maybe, when Remy left Fence's to go spend some time in the mansion, he took those burnt cards with him. He didn't see much use in them except for great projectiles - he was resisting very hard just charging one and throwing it over the lake to see how big of a explosion it made - but he wondered if maybe Shani would see something in it. Shani wasn't as bad as Fence, but only because she had some inkling of a common sense. Remy hoped that meant she would do something more useful to it than mine bitcoins. Because that would mean that Fence was right that bitcoins were a good thing to mine, and he couldn't actually live with that being true.

He brought them over to the mansion in a plastic bad in the bottom of his luggage, and, a few days later, when he finally remembered them, he made them into two neat piles, wrapped them in a dark plastic sheet, and tied a large, glossy green tape around them, ending in an over-elaborate, over-sized bow, because it was a gift, and half the fun was in unwrapping it.

Shani was very easy to find. Half her free time, she would be spending it in the computer labs, doing computer things. Remy knocked on the open door to let her know of his arrival, made sure to walk into his line of vision just in case she hadn't heard him over any headphones she might be wearing, and slid the wrapped up gift over her table. "Happy Earth Day, petite."

Remy had guessed right, as Gadget pulled out her earbuds when she saw him. The music she was listening to was still easy to hear, even coming out of the tiny earbuds.

"Oww... what is?" she asked, smiling brightly, but didn't waste much time waiting for an explanation. Her Israeli accent and his Cajun French made for an interesting combination. Anything with a bow was meant to be unwrapped, and she had the bow off in a flash. Not one to waste much, she didn't actually tear the bag but carefully unfolded it.

"New parts!" she cried upon reaching the contents. Not working mattered very little to her; things like this rarely stayed in their original form and use for very long. It would take her a little while to analyze them and see what had burned up. On one it was pretty obvious that a resister had gone all Chernobyl, but others would require more effort to trace.

The nice thing about cards like this was they were a goldmine of microprocessors to be re-purposed. Shani came around the table to give him a hug. Remy was very adept at gift-giving, and she figured he'd earned it.

There was really no way for Remy to find broken computer pieces as great as she would, so he thought the gift should speak for itself, so he only answered her question with an encouraging look, not that she needed much goading to dig into the wrap. She was, as with all things, careful even with the fragile plastic that covered it, and her excitement as seeing the gift itself was exactly what he had expected, and it brought a smile to his lips.

He returned the hug, and watched her go back to studying the cards. Her calling them 'new' once caught him off guard but, by now, he had learned she took a certain creativity with the word. "I thought you might use them for something." He found a place to sit on his side of the table, not being one to gift and dash. "I'm really not sure any of them work at all." He still insisted on saying, because he still felt kind of weird about someone being so excited for broken stuff.

"Are you working on anything fun?" Remy knew more about computers than he appeared to, but that didn't mean much when you were talking about people like Shani, or Fence. He wouldn't get the details, or be able to help, unless given very specific instructions, but he still liked hearing about it.

"No need work, I mostly, what is word? Eat for parts?" she told him happily, as she pushed her hair back behind her ear.

Shani nodded an affirmative when asked if she was working on anything fun, but didn't look exactly happy.
"Was try to make shield device. Works in lab, but no can figure a way for power. Suck too much to work" she admitted with a frown. She'd been working on the power problem for days in her free time. "Can not know how Stark make work. Beating suit take, must have something like" she said, sounding frustrated as she plopped back into chair. She picked up one of the cards to examine it, beginning to blue print it out of habit.

"If could just get little time with Iron man suit..." she continued, thinking out loud as she stared intently at the card and chewed on her lip while she pondered. Then she would know how Stark made it work! But, at the moment at least, that didn't seem too likely.

Eat for…? Remy knew what he was talking about, and you know what? “Sure.” He said, with a small smile. He was slightly concerned that if he told her the proper term was actually ‘cannibalize’, she would feel bad for the computer pieces. Maybe not. Computer geeks could be brutal. He’d seen the robot wars. She might be into it, and that would make him sad.

“Wait, shield?” He heard, twisting around to look at what she had been working on, and eventually just going around the table to check it out more closely, one hand sitting by her computer, supporting his weight on his arm. “Like a force field?” He didn’t really understand anything, but he bet it was cool to see. He got how, yeah, it should take a lot of energy to power it up. Why? “Stark’s got an Arc Reactor, though.” He was sure she knew that, but that was how he and Fence had always worked - Remy pointing out the obvious, while Fence got increasingly more frustrated with him blabbering on the obvious, and trying to explain to him why he was being obtuse, and walking him through it all. It sometimes helped. Sometimes, Remy got something thrown at him for nothing. Sometimes, Fence went baking to relax and Remy got cupcakes for free. Either way, the problem might not be the lack of efficiency of the shield, but the lack of a power source strong enough.

“Right?” Remy, like any red-blooded human, would love to take one of those armors for a spin. He stared at Shani, the nature (or at least, what he understood at the nature) of her powers hitting him like a brick. “You could actually copy the suit.” His eyes grew bright with the possibilities of it. All she’d have to do was touch it for a few moments, and she’d know exactly how to build her own. Could you imagine? For a brief moment of madness, he considered a plan that would allow them to do just that, and, then, his brain reminded him she was just a mutant child, and he should not be thinking of how to make her a data thief, or a corporate spy. It’s words were punctuated by loud thunder, and sharp bouts of lightning. “But, you know, learning how to do for yourself is important, too.”

Remy was pretty sure her new broken cards wouldn’t help her much with that. He should ask Fence if he had some rare metals to spare, and get yelled at some more. “So, are you doing that for a reason, or did you watch too much Star Trek this week?”

"Stark have Arc reactor, I have... used phone batteries" she said with a hint of sadness as she held one up, but then it turned into a smile and a giggle. Stark was also a gazillionaire, so, yah, he got the best toys. He was also a registered super hero, which she was not, so not drawing a lot of attention was probably a good thing, at least for now.

"And Yes, Shani is Star Trek freak" she admitted proudly. "In lab, shield able to deflect items thrown at, but pull too much power. Got better with capacitor, but still too much. You... around with breakers trip two nights go?" she asked sheepishly. "Will never admit, but might have had something do with experiment..." she confessed. Hey, if you don't blow a few circuit breakers now and then, you couldn't be a card-carrying member of the Mad Scientists Guild.

"Reason is, bad things seem to find. Many bullets at Stark Expo. Want to "be prepared", like Girl Scout. So, start over with this..." she said, and pulled up an engineering drawing on the computer. "Think made good on here now. Have to get design out of head, into computer, so can 3D print. Pieces made most of carbon fiber." she explained, pointing to her head, then the computer as she explained the process she'd been going through to design this new gadget.

The designs on the screen looked a lot like honeycombs, with some sort of mechanics or electronics in each one. While the one she currently had selected filled most of the screen, it was hard to say if that was actual size or zoomed in or out.

At this point, Remy picked a chair from the nearby desk, turning it around to sit on it backwards, resting his arms over the backrest, his chin on top of it. "Really, my phone battery can barely power my phone." Sure, he had about five phones, but only one of them was modern enough to be easily traceable, but it was the price to pay to use the cool apps. And it was the one he had to change once, sometimes twice a day. But that meant Shani clearly knew where the problem was.

He smiled at her when she admitted her love of all things Star Trek. Remy had seen all the old series (plus a few others), and was definitely keeping up with Discovery, but he wasn't the sort to announce it around. His smile turned into a true laugh when she mentioned the blackout. "You know Bobby took the blame for that, right?" A bad reputation can be a dangerous thing.

But her deeper reason wasn't just simple nerd curiosity. She sobered up as she mentioned Stark Expo, and the incident he had missed, being out of the country at the time. "A personal force-field, then?" Remy always did respect people who tried to do something about the bad things that happened. "Smart."

He looked at it, and he knew something of the materials, and of the shape, something about low energy and connectivity, but he was, ultimately, an end user with some maintenance knowledge, mostly of the percussive sort. "It looks cool." Was the judgement he was capable of making. It didn't work yet, but he had some faith in her.

"Wait, were you serious about the phone battery thing?" All he knew about them was that they were poison and you should be careful discarding them. Could they be used for something, really? "Because I can find you some old ones."

"Shani no going to feel guilty about Icee Man. Serve him right for digging out old electric guitar and playing during study time for students" she replied with a prim nod. Problem was, she already felt guilty, and would in all likelihood be knocking on Bobby's door at roughly 9:30 to confess & apologize. Give or take an hour.

"Personal force field, that was original goal. But just too much power. Got to work, but needed backpack-size capacitors. Maybe work for other things, but not what I want for" she said sadly. "But... can always use more batteries!" she said cheerfully, changing gears from disappointed to happy in a dizzying fraction of a second.

"So, this replacement. Each hex is separate, but link to form whole. Ah, ah... work together?" she said, gesturing madly to try to get her point across that they worked together as a team. "Got idea from bees and ants. Was watching ants move big bug. Each hex is like ant; each is intelligent as ant. Knows how to work with others. Each has own kinetic generator; moving, breathing, this make power" she explained, pointing to various odd looking components inside of the hex.

Remy didn't feel bad for Bobby either. Bobby got a lot of crap for the stuff he pulled, but he got away easily with a lot of things, too. The least he could do was make an (unwilling) contribution to science.

He nodded, following her easily as she spoke. It was more conceptual than scientific, though, so it was simple enough. Still, a backpack-sized battery was going to be clunky, and heavy, especially if it was going to be good only for a single use or so before needing to recharge for God knows how long. With the size of the clips nowadays, and the complete lack of aiming with the recoil, Remy knew for a fact you'd be better off just dropping everything and running. Still, he was nothing if not supportive. "It's very Ghostbusters. Throw in a photon stream and a trap, you can get rich off of paranormal show fans." The batteries, he could get her some. Fence had another pile of burned phones he was also promising to do something with since before they met that just grew bigger.

He listened intently at her explanation, though he didn't get every detail. He didn't need to, he wasn't about to try and build his own, but he got the general gist of it. Once it was done,
if it ever became useful to someone like him, he would get himself half a dozen and tinker with it enough to understand at least the bare minimum of how to make quick fixes to it, unless she went the Apple route and made it almost impossible, then he was just throwing it over to Fence and listen to him complain while he worked. He wouldn't be able to bring it to Shani, though it might apparently make more sense, because she would be busy inventing something else already. "So, you can either make the hexes smaller, or make them each work better, needing less of them." Those were basically the two choices with a project like this; otherwise, she was going to need to scrape it and start with a new one. "What are you going for?"

"Ah, but that thing. Lot small hexes fit same area one big hex. So use small where must be flexible, but large where not!" she chirped happily. "Around joint, hex very small. But chest, front and back legs, make big. as no must bend much. But, have one tiny problem... Need to test" she said, as her tone of voice began to be laced with honey and hearts.

"Have made couple of sample pieces. Need to see if hold up to bullet. Remy maybe have way to test parts, see if hold up? Was go make mass driver to test, but maybe you easier way?" she cooed with a big smile, big blue eyes and batting eyelashes.

In the months since her arrive, Shani, (or Gadget, her code name) had gotten something of a reputation. Beta-test gadgets didn't always work exactly as planned. Stuff she made on the fly could have all sorts of quirks... This project was at least something she'd been able to plan out, but it seemed like she was hoping to have "someone" hit one with a high-velocity projectile! Would it hold up? Would it disintegrate? Would it explode? One way to find out.

Einstein said "A Test is worth a Thousand theories".
